The fields are fertilized, firmed and smoothed. In the barn, 1200 pounds of Russet Burbank potatoes have been cut for seed and are ready for planting once the soil warms above 50 degrees and the sliced faces have developed the corky later of cells that will be a barrier against decay.
In a couple of weeks we will sow thousands of seeds of Buttercup squash which will be transplanted out in early June. Thousands of cabbages will be seeded at the end of June for fall harvest.
The farm at the time is like a nursery full of infants. All is potential, all is pristine. The weeds and insects, diseases and dry spells are non-existent. The mind’s eye can revel in the beautiful potential.
May 5 is designated as Giving Tuesday this year and heaven knows the list of recipients in need is a long one. Here on the farm the program is as basic as it gets; grow as much food as we can in order to give it away.
We do it without salaries or benefits and rely on the kindness of friends and strangers to get the produce to its needful recipients. Gifts of money are always welcome and useful. Gifts of time and energy are critical as well.
If you are able to commit some time in hoeing or in harvest, we maintain a list of volunteers and can contact you as the need for help arises.
Be safe and well, and thank you !
